Medic blinked nervously at the shutter door, trying hard not to hyperventilate.
He couldn't remember breakfast at all, but felt sure that whatever he had eaten was going to make a repeat performance, until a warm hand pressed against his back.
"Doc...breathe." Engineer patted his back warmly. "Setup's about to begin. Got everything you need?"
"Ja..." Medic breathed, hefting his Medigun up as the sirens began to wail, and the shutter opened.
Training the medigun on Heavy, Medic ran after him, pulling the lever back to deploy the healing beam as the team made their way past the capture points, punctuated with shouted jeers and many demands for a dispenser from Scout. Heavy surveyed the open area carefully, noting the minute to go. "How much charge, Doktor?" He asked, moving to stand on the first capture point. Medic checked, his heart in his throat. "76%"
Sniper stood with them, pulling the string on his bow experimentally. "Engie's stuff is up an running if you need refills." He nodded towards the north-western corner, where a sentry chirruped steadily, and a dispenser hummed away, punctuated by the almost rythmitic sound of metal striking metal. Medic nodded, and Sniper nocked an arrow, shaking his hand slightly as he caught the pad of his thumb between bow and the arrow's flight.
"Don't you use a finger tab?"
Sniper blinked at him. "Eh? No, I ain't made one yet." He grinned. "Did archery ages ago, but I only just got me Huntsman."
"Vhat about a thumb ring?" Medic suggested. Sniper nodded, and slipped his right glove off, removing a thick, silver band from his middle finger, and slipped it onto his thumb.
"I'll let you know how it goes after the battle, doc." He replaced his glove, and readjusted his aim. "Ready?"
Medic exhaled, and glanced down as the barrel of the Medigun began to crackle. "I am charged!"
"Wait before deploying." Heavy ordered, picking up his precious Sasha. "Keep Uber if you can, use it to press them back if they get out. Between us, we should do good."
"Five, four, three, two, one!"
Sirens wailed, and Medic swallowed thickly as rockets blazed across the landscape, bullets pockmarking the ground. Heavy sidestepping out of their way behind a supply shed, eyes narrowing.
"Incoming!" He roared, and turned. "We go together, Doktor!"
Medic stepped out behind Heavy, who marched forwards towards the BLU base, his minigun spinning up. "Vait..."
Medic stared in horror at the pitch black doorway, biting down on his lip. An arrow whistled noisily past him, and Sniper swore from behind them. "Heavy?"
"Not yet..." Heavy called back, the minigun still spinning without firing. They strode closer, and Medic ducked behind a small outcrop, panicking as he watched Heavy moving closer.
Blood exploded over him from the back of Heavy's head, and Medic shrank back in horror as Heavy fell to his knees. "No! NO!"
Sniper ducked behind the shed's cover. "Their Sniper's using his scope! Get behind something!" He shouted, nocking another arrow. Medic covered his mouth, and noticed their Soldier, who was firing rockets at the darkened doorway.
Scout limped next to him, clutching at his knee. "Fucker shot me. You heal me up?"
Medic nodded, and aimed at Scout mindlessly, still feeling shocked. Scout swore at the sight of Heavy's body. "Their Sniper's really got it in for the big guy." Scanning the area, Scout frowned. "Go with Solly, and uber him up." He pointed. "Their Spy ain't shown yet, you seen him?"
"Not yet." Medic stammered, and glanced at the shed that Sniper was ducking around. "Can you distract zhem? If I can get behind zhere, I can use zhe charge on Soldier."
Scout saluted, grinning. "Being an annoying fuck is totally my speciality, Doc. Leave them to me."
Medic hesitated as Scout adjusted his cap. "Hey Solly! Uber heading your way!" He dived over the outcrop of rocks, shouting slurs at the BLUs as he went.
Sniper must have hit his counterpart. "The bullets come outta the slim end, mate!" He crowed victoriously, ducking back behind the shed. He winked at Medic. "Get bloody going!"
Medic's eyes widened as the air behind him shimmered. "SPY!"
Sniper turned, but it was too late, the blade had done it's job and sank into his back. Medic tried to unholster his beloved Blutsauger quickly, and panicked as it caught on his coat, dragging it in the way of the gun's barrel as he aimed at the Spy.
"Docteur." Spy grabbed the Blutsauger's barrel, forcing the gun up and pointing at Medic's own chin. "Soldier is furious with you. We're to recapture you from these...idiots."
"Nein!" Medic kicked as Spy stepped back, grinning triumphantly. He was still pulling his coat out of the Blutsauger's way as the Ambassador lowered to point between his eyes.
"I wonder which respawn room you will wake in?" Spy grinned.
"Ours, you slimy crouton!"
Shovel dug into the crook of Spy's neck, and Medic fought the urge to laugh as the BLU staggered away, looking shocked. Soldier pushed his helmet up above his eyebrows to study Medic, brandishing his bloody weapon. "You all right, doc?"
"Thank god..." Medic nodded. "Danke, Soldier. I owe you."
"Heavy's on his way. Come on, we have a job to do." Soldier grinned, and Medic smiled back. Amongst the bullets, rockets and ever present danger of the BLUs, he almost felt like his old self.
