Medic wrung his hands as he followed Heavy towards the War Room, sitting down next to him. He watched as Sniper moved to sit next to him but, after a moment's consideration, moved so the table was between them, next to Spy. Scout grinned, and took the empty seat next to Medic, his arms crossing on the tabletop.
"All right, good to see you all." Soldier nodded at Medic. "It's good that we finally have a Medic on our team. Welcome aboard, Doc."
Medic nodded at him, heart pounding in his throat, and Soldier raised a remote control, the room plunging into darkness as the projector stuttered into life.
"Tomorrow we're defending Gravel Pit. If we can keep them back from our base, we're heading to Tuefort." Soldier stretched up, nodding at Engineer. "In your own time..."
"All right. We're heading straight round there, I'll set a dispenser and sentry up first, get us a foothold in the pocket." Engineer laid a tranparent sheet over the map, and marked an X next to the first capture point. "I'm setting up here."
Medic frowned. "N...nein." Engineer paused.
"Something to add, Doc?"
"Zhey never have a plan. Set up behind zheir backs and zhey'll be confused." Medic pointed. Engineer grinned.
"I see." Engineer hummed. "I'll set a tele up as well, get you back from respawn quicker."
Soldier smirked. "Well, Sniper, what've you got planned?"
"I'm taking those fuckers out with me Huntsman as fast as possible." He was slumped in his chair. "I'll head to the frontlines with you, make sure they see exactly who's plugging them in the head."
Spy snorted in laughter. "I'll go to the front with you, and play best friends with their Engineer."
Soldier nodded. "Good. Scout, you got your Sandman?"
"Sure, been using it with my Force-A-Nature..." Scout grinned. "You want me to be a stunner?"
"You'll keep them busy and stunned while the Doc and Heavy mow them down. We only need to keep them away for a while." Soldier growled. Medic glanced up at Heavy, who grinned.
"If Heavy gets respawned, you're with me, Doctor." Soldier pointed at Pyro and Demo. "You two stay with Engineer. Demo, sticky up the point and blow up any one sneaky enough to get close. Pyro, protect Engie's machines. We fall back if they get through. Shouldn't happen, though."
Soldier hit a button to turn the projector off, everyone blinking in the sudden brightness. "Everyone clear on the plan?"
"Yes Sir!" Everyone shouted in response. Soldier grinned, and saluted.
"Let's win this one, boys. Good night's sleep all around." He pointed at Spy and Sniper. "That doesn't mean you two spend all night fucking."
Spy looked startled. "Would we do zhat?"
Scout laughed. "Like we don't all listen to you two all damn night."
Sniper rolled his eyes. "Gotcha. No sex till after the battle." He stood, stretching out. "Doc, er...you got a moment?"
"...Ja...come to zhe infirmary." Medic stood, his heart hammering in his throat as he stalked through the base, Sniper's footsteps following him briskly.
Medic held the door open, and Sniper stepped past him with a quiet ''thanks''.
Sniper grinned at him. "Look, I won't keep you too long, I know you don't like me too much. Spy and I need a bit of...assistance?"
Medic blinked at him, lost. "Vas?"
Sniper half-laughed. "You're really not gonna make this easy on me, eh?" He scratched his cheek nervously. "Erm...Something to make the job easier?"
Medic shook his head, completly nonplussed. "I don't know..."
"Oh!" Medic turned scarlet, and went to one of the cabinets at the back of the infirmary. "I'm...sorry, I don't know the...slang..." He retrieved a tube, and handed it over to Sniper, who laughed.
"Sorry, thought I'd spare the both of us." He tossed the tube up and down. "Next time I'll just come right out and say it."
Medic laughed, and Sniper smiled warmly. "I owe you one, Doc. Just...don't tell Solly. He'd have a field day."
Medic nodded as the door opened. "I can file this under doctor-patient confidentiality." He smiled at Heavy, who grinned. "See you at breakfast, Sniper."
"Later, big man." Sniper grinned, and ducked around Heavy, who held a hand out to Medic.
"Is late, Doktor. You come and relax, is best way to prepare."
Medic hesitated. "Lead on, comrade."
Heavy smiled, and led Medic to the room they were sharing. He pulled out a thick book, which Medic recognised as a battered copy of Grimm's Fables.
Heavy held the book out. "Get into bed and read. I will return." He grinned, and Medic hesitated, before obeying, changing into the spare shirt Heavy was lending him, and sliding under the sheets. He sat up against the headboard, chewing his lip thoughtfully as he flicked through the book, settling on the tale of Rapunzel.
He looked up as Heavy returned, and set two mugs down on the bedside table. Medic tried not to watch him over the book as he got ready for bed, and jumped as he slid into bed next to Medic, one arm looping around him to gather the two mugs.
"Here. Is Dalokohs drink." Heavy rested against the headboard, and gently tugged on Medic's shoulder to force him to rest against his side. Medic stared down at the warm mug for a long moment before he gulped down a mouthful.
"Zhat's...Danke..." He whispered, his voice strained. Heavy sighed, and sipped at his own cup quietly, retrieving the book so that Medic could hold his own drink, taking his time on each page.
After a while, Heavy leaned closer, and gently prodded Medic's arm. "Doktor?"
When he gave no response, Heavy carefully pried the empty mug from his fingers, setting it down on the bedside table, along with his own mug. He tucked the tome of fables into the top drawer carefully, and removed Medic's glasses, before rearranging the man himself to lay on the bed.
Turning so that he was back to back with Medic, Heavy reached out to pull the small cord on his lamp, resolving to protect his new Doktor in tomorrow's battle, no matter what.
